John Lenehan’s career as a pianist has taken him all over the world, from Abu Dhabi to Zurich and from Aberdeen to Zimbabwe. As well as recording more than 50CDs he has appeared as soloist with major orchestras and collaborated with some of the leading instrumentalists of our time.
His interest in the combination of music and film has been long-standing. As director of “Sounds for Silents” he has written and arranged more than 20 film scores, which have been performed throughout the UK in Festivals such as Aldeburgh, Cheltenham, Brighton and Harrogate. There have also been performances in Italy, Germany, Norway and Australia.
When listening to music many people respond to what they hear by relating it to other sensations - they imagine colours and shapes or create storylines. Throughout the twentieth century leading filmmakers created work inspired this way - their own responses to music. In these programmes John Lenehan has collected together a wide variety of piano music all with film accompaniments. They range from cartoons (including one of the very first) to abstract representations (similar to Walt Disney's 'Fantasia') to straightforward story telling as in the charming films based on 'Carmen' and 'The Magic Flute'. Great entertainment and something for everyone to enjoy!
