Described by Gramophone Magazine as possessing ‘the enviable gift to turn almost anything he plays into pure gold’, Ashley Wass is a former BBC New Generation Artist and the only British pianist to have won First Prize at the London International Piano Competition.
His recent CD release of Bax Symphonic Variations and Concertante for Left Hand with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra ,conducted by James Judd, has received fantastic reviews and was cited as the benchmark recording and featured as ‘BBC Music Choice’ in BBC Music Magazine. The CD was also highly recommended in Gramophone: “Ashley Wass is the most stylish, characterful and charismatic of the three soloists: the way he shapes the spellbinding opening paragraph of the final section is sheer magic and betokens a true poet of the keyboard.”
In April 2007, Ashley was appointed as Artistic Director of the Lincolnshire International Chamber Music Festival. He joined the piano faculty of the Royal College of Music in September 2008.
Future engagements include recitals in Cyprus, Germany, France, Istanbul and Chicago and three performances at the BBC Proms: the world premiere of a new work for piano by John McCabe; Stravinsky Rite of Spring for two pianos with Simon Crawford-Phillips and Stravinsky Les Noces with the London Sinfonietta conducted by Edward Gardner.
