Quartet No 2 Quartet No 3 Hyperion CDA 67153 'One of the finest chamber recordings of any genre I've heard all year and one that catches the idiom of the music in near-definitive terms. Superbly played and engineered, it's a magnificent beginning to what promises to be a must-hear series' The Independent on Sunday 'It is high time that a younger generation of Russian string players should tackle this key oeuvre of 20th-century chamber music, and in the St Petersburg Quartet we surely have the natural successors to the Borodin's crown. These virtuosic and sumptuous-toned accounts of the A and F major quartets easily rival the quasi-orchestral sonority the older quartet brought to this music and they are no less adept at mining the profound melancholy that pervades Shostakovich's great, lamenting slow movements and the mordant, sardonic wit of his parodistic waltzes and scherzos. A dazzling debut' The Sunday Times 'Deserves an emphatic recommendation and makes one impatient for the ensemble's next Shostakovich disc' BBC Music Magazine 'An edge-of-the-seat experience as this Russian quartet hurls itself headlong into the scores' BBC Music Magazine 'These readings warrant strong commendation ... Excellent performances.' Classic CD ‘Extraordinary intensity and depth’ Los Angeles Times |

Quartet No 4 Quartet No 6 Quartet No 8 Hyperion CDA 67154 'These are among the great interpretations that have been placed on disc' Fanfare, USA 'The virtues in the St Petersburg Quartet's Shostakovich are as evident here as in the first volume of their complete cycle. Once again it's not so much the technical excellence of their full-blooded playing that really strikes home as their ability to project the subtext that lies beneath the notes. Its performance is full of revelatory nuances.' BBC Music Magazine 'The players respond with performances of total concentration, thoughtful refinement and rapt intensity, making their readings very special indeed.' The Scotsman 'The St Petersburg turns in a performance of winning directness full of colour and contrast.' Gramophone |

Quartet No 5 Quartet No 7 Quartet No 9 Hyperion CDA 67155 'These are among the great interpretations that have been placed on disc … I do believe that this cycle could grow to some of the most impressive Shostakovich performances ever placed on disc' Fanfare, USA 'Playing of a technical command that invites comparison with the best available' Gramophone 'An emotional intensity which leaves little doubt that it meant a great deal to the composer – and to these prize-winning Russian players' Liverpool Evening News ‘An extremely well-balanced and -matched ensemble, giving highly energised and committed performances. This recording seems to have found the ideal balance between youthful vigour and adult refinement. The tone is warm and the recording sumptuous. The disc is very highly recommended’ Music Teacher |

Quartet No12 Quartet No14 Quartet No10 Hyperion CDA 67156 'The St Petersburg Quartet consistently score in terms of idiomatic colour and gesture' International Record Review 'One of the finest in a fine series' Inverness Courier “This is the penultimate disc in a remarkable series; when Hyperion issues the final in early 2004, it's likely that St. Petersburg's will be regarded as the finest complete Shostakovich cycle on disc. [In] the 14th Quartet, written in the year before Shostakovich's death: the St. Petersburg's performance makes the final movement, with its motifs flying from violin to viola to cello and back, sound like a Dostoyevskian disquisition on the meaning of life.” Andante.com |

This group obviously has this music in its collective soul and it shows ... A superb achievement that makes me want to hear the rest of the cycle as a priority' www.musicweb.com |

Piano Trio No2 Quartet No1 Piano Quintet Hyperion CDA 67158 'Russian players have an unanswerable trump card when interpreting Russian music: self-evidently, they know what it's all about. A very fine achievement all round' Gramophone 'With a superb recording to boot, this release provides an extremely fitting conclusion to the St Petersburg's excellent Shostakovich cycle' BBC Music Magazine |
