Sacred Sand Mandala
- Sand painting is an ancient Tibetan art form and coloured sand is used as a focus for meditation during many Tibetan Buddhist religious rituals.
- When the mandala is completed the sand is swept up and disposed of, often poured into running water so that any merit generated by the creation of the mandala can be dispersed into the world.
- The creation of the sand mandala can be watched and followed by the general public. This very short video demonstrates the process of the creation and destruction of a sand mandala: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ga5s_qYgJS8
Workshops
- Dance - the monks introduce details of the unique costumes worn in the dances and invite the participants to learn a few of the steps.
- Butter Sculpture - an ancient Tibetan Buddhist art. Butter sculptures are displayed on altars and shrines in monasteries or family homes. Although traditionally made from Yak butter, Play doh can be used for this two hour workshop to create several styles of flowers, conch, jewels and animals.
- Colouring Tibetan designs - this one-hour workshop is designed with small children in mind. The monks will provide prepared drawings of Tibetan designs, such as the Eight Auspicious Symbols.
- Sand Painting - This workshop includes an introduction in how to create designs using the same techniques as monks use in creating a Sacred Sand Mandala. Designs will be pre-drawn so that participants can draw the sand following the lines.
- Mani Stone Painting - stones are painted with the prayer and mantra Om mani padme hum, asking for the qualities of wisdom, compassion, and a good heart. The act of doing this is said to bring much good merit. Mani stones are often seen placed along roadsides and rivers or placed together to form mounds or long walls.
