Red Priest's "Red Hot Baroque" - Biography
_
Red Priest is one of the major success stories on the international concert scene today. Named after the flame-haired composer and priest, Antonio Vivaldi, this unique ensemble has redefined the art of baroque music performance, combining the fruits of extensive research with swashbuckling virtuosity, creative re-composition, heart-on-sleeve emotion and compelling stagecraft. Red Priest’s inimitable style has won the group a large, eclectic following worldwide - with several hundred concert performances in prestigious festivals throughout Europe, America, Australia, the USSR and the Middle and Far East, and numerous TV and radio broadcasts. In April 2005 Red Priest was the subject of an hour-long documentary for the UK’s premiere arts programme, the South Bank Show – broadcast to almost 1 million people. Red Priest’s three CD recordings have achieved international acclaim, consolidating the group’s cult status at the cutting edge of classical music. In the words of a leading UK music critic: “If nobody goes over the top, how will we know what lies on the other side?”
Piers Adams has been hailed as “the reigning recorder virtuoso in the world today” (Washington Post), known for an extraordinary expressive range, imagination and technical facility – on an instrument still regarded by many as a toy!
Julia Bishop puts her gut-stringed 1741 violin through its paces with a flamboyant intensity described as “scorching” (Washington Post) and “Psychedelic” (BBC Music Magazine).
Angela East’s cello playing has been heard in the major orchestras and concert halls of the world, and now underpins the Red Priest sound with truly “elemental power” (The Times, London).
David Wright creates a virtual orchestra at the harpsichord, with fingers a-blur extracting rich waves of sound, and providing driving baroque rhythms.
